800 years of history
800 years of history
Diemen, located just 6 km southeast of Amsterdam, is one of the oldest settlements in the region, with its first recorded mention dating back to 1033. The town’s name comes from the river Diem, which once connected the Bijlmermeer, the Gaasp, and the Zuiderzee, making Diemen an important link in medieval waterways.
Early Beginnings
The first inhabitants built their homes on terps—artificial mounds—to protect themselves from flooding. They established a wooden church and cemetery, laying the foundation for a community that would endure for centuries.
Golden Age & Artistic Heritage
In the 17th century, Diemen thrived as a rural village near Amsterdam. Its landscapes were immortalized by Rembrandt, who sketched scenes of Oud-Diemen. The construction of canals like the Weespertrekvaart shifted the village center to Diemerbrug, creating a new hub of activity.
Modernization & Resilience
Diemen evolved through industrialization in the 19th century and urbanization in the 20th. During World War II, its strategic location made it a target; tragic events like the 1944 execution of five resistance members are commemorated with monuments today.
