De Oude Smidse

Op de muurankers in de voorgevel van de Oude Smidse is het jaartal 1749 te lezen. Dit jaartal is bedrieglijk, want het pand is in werkelijkheid ouder. De stichtingsdatum is helaas niet bekend. De oudste eigenaar die tot nu toe in het Diemense gemeentearchief werd gevonden is Willem Wolf. In 1734 wordt hij voor het eerst genoemd. De tweede eigenaar, Anthonie Bronsman, gaat de smederij in 1749 geheel verbouwen en plaatst het smeedijzeren muurankers met jaartal. Links naast de smederij stond vroeger een vrijwel identiek pand (gedateerd 1745). Rechts bevond zich de houten travalje waar paarden konden worden beslagen.

De historische structuur van het pand, met de smederij, woonkamer, kelder, achterkamer, opkamer en zolder is nog intact. Daardoor geeft het een goed beeld van hoe de smid met zijn gezin tot in de twintigste eeuw woonde en werkte.

Recent is het gebouw liefdevol gerestaureerd tot woonhuis. Veel originele details van het gebouw (trap, rookkast, bedstede) zijn daarbij bewaard. Ook oorspronkelijke elementen uit de smederij, zoals het smidsvuur, de blaasbalg en het aambeeld zijn in het pand behouden.

 

On the wall anchors in the front façade of the Old Smithy, the year 1749 can be read. This date is misleading, as the building is actually older. Unfortunately, the exact founding date is unknown. The earliest owner found in the Diemen municipal archives so far is Willem Wolf, first mentioned in 1734. The second owner, Anthonie Bronsman, completely renovated the smithy in 1749 and added the wrought-iron wall anchors with the date. To the left of the smithy once stood an almost identical building (dated 1745). On the right was the wooden “travalje,” where horses could be shod.

The historic structure of the building—with the smithy, living room, cellar, back room, raised room, and attic—remains intact. This offers a vivid picture of how the blacksmith and his family lived and worked well into the twentieth century.

Recently, the building was lovingly restored into a residence. Many original details (such as the staircase, smoke cabinet, and box bed) have been preserved. Original elements from the smithy, including the forge, bellows, and anvil, also remain in place.
