Tankstation De Blokhut

In 1933 begonnen de gebroeders Smits aan de weg naar Muiden hun eerste ‘filling station De Blokhut’. Het idee voor de naam kwam van het houten varkenskot dat oorspronkelijk op dezelfde plek stond. In 1939 bouwden zij het huidige gebouw met dienstwoningen. Rechte lijnen en rechte hoeken zijn kenmerkend voor de architectuur van de Nieuwe Zakelijkheid, de meest moderne bouwstijl van vóór de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Gezegd wordt, dat De Blokhut het oudste, nu nog in gebruik zijnde benzinestation in Nederland is.

In 1933, the Smits brothers opened their first “Filling Station De Blokhut” on the road to Muiden. The name was inspired by the wooden pigsty that originally stood on the same spot. In 1939, they built the current building with service apartments. Straight lines and sharp angles are characteristic of the architecture of the Nieuwe Zakelijkheid (New Objectivity), the most modern architectural style before World War II. It is said that De Blokhut is the oldest petrol station in the Netherlands still in use today.
